Title
Grain Storage System, Laird French farm, 1974, Rossville, Kansas
Description
This on-farm-grain storage system was installed on the Laird French farm 2 1/2 miles south of Rossville last year. Farmers are showing more and more interest in such systems. This one was included in the annual irrigation tour this year by Shawnee County Extension Agent Herb Bulk.
Mr. French's system is all gravity flow. There are four 10,000 bushel bins with rings that add an additional 4,000 bushels at the top. Cones at the bottom of each bin bring the total capacity of the system to 60,000 bushels. Each bin is equipped with the two aeration fans.
A 1,500 bushel holding bin feeds the grain into the continuous air flow drier. The drier can take 10 points of moisture out of 350 bushels an hour. A 1,000 gallon propane tank was installed to fuel the drier. One tank of propane is used every four days while the system is operating.
French's system has a dual grain dump--one for high moisture corn and one for dried corn. There is a roller mill for grinding corn which is fed to the French cattle. This system is different from other systems recently installed in the area because it is designed not only to handle cash corn, but to be used in conjunction with a beef feeding operation as well.
French raises the human consumption white corn and sells it commercially. He has a 60-foot, 50-ton scale to handle semis. The 85-foot, 3,000 bushel and hour grain leg can load a semi in about 20 minutes.
By having his own on the farm grain storage system, French can sell high quality (1 or 2 grade) corn to his private buyers. The system offers him the convenience of flexibility with no docking, storage or in and out charges. He figures he makes 30 cents a bushel more by having his own system.
