Subject

Palmyra was the first settlement near present-day Baldwin City. A post office was designated in Palmyra from June 29, 1857 to May 22, 1862. The post office and a general store were housed in this building. It was moved to the SE corner of 5th and Ames about 1900 by Arthur Bridwell. Bridwell was a collector of old newspapers, magazines, Civil War and Indian artifacts. After his death, the building was dismantled and rebuilt at the present location in 1975-76.

Description

Commercial building, square with central entrance, one-and-a-half story, five front and three side bays, wood frame construction, gable roof with gable roof dormers. 4/4 double-hung wooden windows, paired wooden entrance doors with six lights and lower panels. Shed front porch on square posts with wooden floor.
