Subject

Constructed in 1893, the Masonic Hall building replaced an earlier building owned by the Free Masons dating back at least to 1886. The existing structure was constructed by the Baldwin City Building Association. The Masonic Hall occupied the upper floor. M.J. Bristow accquired the west half of the property, in 1904 the Masonic Lodge was unable to pay taxes and lost its interest in the building. American Legion Post #228 acquired the east half of the property from C.E. Lockwood in 1919.

Description

Corner commercial block in row, rectangle, altered double-front, rear entrance NE corner, two stories, four front bays and five side bays E. Coursed rubble stone foundation, flat roof and parapet. Brick front and side wall, rubble stone side wall W. 1/1 double-hung wooden sills, raised brick cornice with niches and end blocks. Store fronts altered- modern garage and entrance doors.
