Neighbors Help Neighbors, 1980 Harvest, Rossville, Kansas
Description
Part A
Neighbors Help Neighbors
Elsie Rasch brought the noon meal for the harvest crew.
Small communities are caring communities and this fact was driven home Wednesday, November 5, when relatives and neighbors of the late “Bud” Rasch gathered at the Ora Lou Bailey farm in the rural Rossville/Delia community and combined the 280 acres of milo Bud had planted in the spring. One of the men estimated that the nine combines working in the field were doing 80 acres an hour!
Bud’s wife, Elsie, prepared a harvest meal for the men who helped to bring in the milo. Set in the back of a pickup, a sumptious meal of ham sandwiches, baked beans, salads, chips and pies were disappearing mighty fast as the 17 men broke for lunch. Mrs. Rasch said most of the pies were purchased from the Rossville United Methodist Church following the Election Day Dinner. In addition to the field at the Ora Lou Bailey farm, additional crops were harvested from the Rasch farm.
Those assisting in this community harvest crew which was organized by Dwight Martinek were Lanny Bailey, Lester Bailey, Stanley Bailey, Emerson Bailey, Rod Catron, Stanley Thompson, David Stadler, Frank Stach, Denny Keller, Charles Keller, Ralph Page, Benny Martinek, Dwight Martinek, Darrel Bahner, Larry Dean, Jerrol Bahner, and Ron Rasch.
Part B
Neighbors combined milo November 5, on the Bahner farm northeast of Rossville which Bud Rasch farmed. Bud died a couple of months ago and neighbors volunteered to pool their equipment and get the milo out. There were nine combines.
