In 1835 the Federal government, through an Indian agent, selected a certain tract of land for the Pottawatomie tribe. This was the result of a treaty of 1816 which granted the Pottawatomie's a portion of the old Kansas reservation. Later, a portion of this tract was destined to become the townsite of Silver Lake, KS .
It is generally believed that Silver Lake derived its name from the clear and silvery waters of the lake. However, some of the Pottawatomies claimed it was named for a valuable bird dog owned by the chief of tribe-a dog with white curly hair, names "Silver"
