After Taylor Gymnasium burned in 1943, ground was broken for this replacement building December 30, 1945. The first basket ball game in the completed structure was played in January, 1948. The building was named in honor of those who served in World War II. Griest and Ekdall were the designers. George Rinner was the contractor.
Description
Detached institutional building, rectangular main block with rear gymnasium, two and a half stories, six front bays with two projecting gable-roofed entrances, lower rear corner bay SE, reinforced concrete and rough-cut ashlar stone masonry, main truncated hipped roof. 1/1 double-hung wooden windows, triple paneled glazed entrance door. Decorative entrance piers, round arched openings, transoms, water table and belt course, lintels, incised central namestone, raised piers in sidewalls of gymnasium.
