Her 1960 Pontiac was demolished after it was struck by an eastbound Union Pacific passenger train. Mrs. Emert's car apparently stalled on the crossing and she jumped from it as the train was coming to a stop at the station a block away. Heslet, 43, of Rossville was in critical condition after his car struck the rear of the Harold Reser car. Mrs. Reser, riding in the car driven by her daughter, Lillian, was examined for shock and possible back injury and released from the hospital. Heslet's seven year old son, William, was treated for face cuts and released. The accident occurred about 6 p.m. Saturday about two miles west of Rossville on the Maple Hill road. It was reported Mrs. Reser and her daughter were driving to the field to pick up Mr. Reser when they saw him in another car approaching from the opposite direction. The Reser car slowed down to stop so they could talk to Mr. Reser. Heslet's car approaching from behind struck the Reser car, driving it through the ditch. ------ James Wamego Booked for DWI After Wreck TOPEKA - James R. Wamego, 21, Rossville, was booked on drunk charges after he admitted driving a car which turned over late Monday west of Rossville on the Maple Hill road. At first, Wamego insisted that he was a passenger, officers said. He was found lying near the car in a corn field a short distance west of US-24 on the Maple Hill Road. No other occupants of the car could be located. The owner of the car, James S. Vanderblomen, Channelview, Texas, later told officers he loaned the car to Wamego. Title A name given to the resource Olive Branch Cemetery history, Rossville, Kansas Description An account of the resource OLIVE BRANCH CEMETERY INSCRIPTIONS Olive Branch Cemetery, one of three public cemeteries in Rossville township, is located in the NW ¼ of Sec. 9 T10S R13E, at the corner of N.W. 86th and Bailey Rd. It was started in connection with the Olive Branch Chapel (United Brethren), which was about a mile east on the Rossville to Delia Road. The land on which the cemetery is located was part of the railroad grant received by the A. T. & S, F. railroad from the U.S. Government (Certificate dated 17 Oct 1669 Patent dated 16 Sep 1873 filed with Shawnee Co. Register of Deeds,Bk. 16 p 426 and Bk. 37 p 91). In June 1881, the entire quarter-section was sold to A. S. Stanley, who then sold the west half of the quarter-section to Fred Franklin later in the same year. A Quit-Claim deed from Fred K. Franklin and wife Maria J. to the trustees of the U. B. "Christ" Church, dated 6 Aug 1885 and filed 28 Dec 1886, is found in Bk. 124 p 177 of the Shawnee Co. Reg. of Deeds' records. Trustees named in this deed were Benjamin Franklin, Isaac McCullough, Silas Joy, Wm. Hook and S. P. Zickafoose. For a consideration of $30.00, Mr. and Mrs. Franklin relinquished all claims to "a strip or parcel of land 40 rods long and 12 rods wide running north and south off the NW ¼ of Section 9.10.13 to be used as a cemetery by said church," The Olive Branch Chapel was disbanded about 1923 and the cemetery was turned over to Rossville township by the U, B. Church trustees. A Quit-Claim deed signed by J. M. Franklin, Mrs. L, A, Lasswell, Silas Joy and R. D, James as trustees for the U. B. Church of Rossville twp, dated 9 Mar 1921, was filed 23 Nov 1923 with the Shawnee county Reg. of Deeds and recorded in Bk. 492 p 319. The church was sold about that time for a Czech church, and the building was torn down about 1955• An article appearing in the Topeka State Journal for Saturday, 19 Sep 1959, tells of the fifth annual picnic for members of the former church which was to be held that Sunday afternoon in the Rossville City Park. The picnics were begun in 1955 by Miss Miriam Franklin, a former teacher at Washburn and a granddaughter of one of the original members. The first two picnics had been held on the old Franklin farm. In 1959 Emil Kovar was president of the picnic group and Glenn A. Page was sec-retary. The following inscriptions were submitted to the committee at different times by Mrs. Katy Matthews, Mrs. Livonia Jacobe and Mrs. Ruby Rezac. The cemetery was bisited [sic] in 1977 by Mrs. Helen King and Mrs. Shirley O'Toole and seemed to be well cared for. An asterisk (*) indicates no stone was located for the person who was supposed to be buried in the cemetery. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol which worked the accident, Debbie D. Lord, 18, Rossville, attempted to enter U.S. 24 from a county road at milepost 351.9 at the Rossville city limits at 7:40 a.m. A GMC semi driven by Joe A. Turner, 55, Route 5, Huntsville, Ark., was westbound on U.S. 24. The report shows that Miss Lord pulled in front of the truck, was struck by the truck, pushing her off the road into a grain trailer parked on private property. Miss Lord was taken by ambulance to St. Francis Hospital; Turner was not injured. Preliminary reports show $2,600 damage to the Lord vehicle and $400 damage to the semi. Title A name given to the resource Five Rossville girls injured in car accident, 1979, Rossville, Kansas Subject The topic of the resource Transportation accidents Description An account of the resource [Caption: The Datsun wagon in which five girls were injured was extensively damaged.] Five Rossville Girls Injured in Car Accident At approximately 3:30 p.m. Wed¬nesday, May 16, an accident occurred on a country road near Rossville which resulted in injuries to the driver and her four passengers, according to the accident report of the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Department. Diana Miller, 16, Route 7, Topeka, was the driver of a Datsun wagon. According to Miss Miller, she was driving east on N. W. 54th at an unknown rate of speed. Officer Dennis Gonzales of the Sheriff’s Department, said Miss Miller lost control of the vehicle when she topped a hill, went into the north ditch then careened across the road into the south ditch. The vehicle was airborne through some trees and stumps before coming to rest on the road. Passengers in the car were Suzanne Miller, 14, sister of the driver; Denice McQueen, 15, Delia; Debbie Allen, 15, Route 8, Topeka; and Deborah Carathers, 15, Rossville. Following the accident, Miss Allen apparently left the scene to find help, became confused, and was picked up by a Rossville youth and driven to the Mainstreeter Restaurant. The youth then located “Pat” Kerwin, Rossville patrolman who was off duty, and he was the first officer on the scene. Ambulances were called from Topeka and the girls were all taken to Stormont-Vail Regional Medical Center. The Shawnee County Sheriff’s Department worked the accident. Miss Easum, nursing supervisor at Stormont-Vail reported Thursday morning that Diana is in satisfactory condition; she was admitted with facial lacerations. Suzanne is in satisfactory condition; she has a fractured jaw. Denice is in fair condition; she is under observation for possible head injuries. Deborah is in satisfactory condition; she was admitted with facial lacerations. Miss Eason said that Debbie was treated in the emergency room and released. According to the accident report, there were no arrests made, nor were any citations given. Description An account of the resource Photographer Urbin I. Rudell, 1878 – 1966, was born in Leavenworth County. He became interested in photography at the age of 15. Mr. Rudell married Alice Mae Berry in 1903. The couple moved to Bonner Springs, KS in 1907. Around this time city leaders hired Mr. Rudell to take pictures of the Bonner Springs businesses, homes and points of interest in the hopes of promoting Bonner Springs as a health resort. Urbin I. Rudell continued to take photographs when requested or whenever a major event occurred in Bonner Springs, KS.
