Kovar suffered rib injuries, said a county official, and was treated at Stormont-Vail Regional Medical Center and released. Kovar was driving south across the railroad tracks, which run parallel and about 300 feet north of US-24, about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, said Deputy John Barber of the Shawnee County Sherrif's Department. When Kovar saw the train approaching from the west, he stopped the car and tried to put the vehicle in reverse, Barber said. Instead, he shifted into park, leaving about four feet of the front of the car across the tracks. The one-engine train, which routinely shuttles empty cars between Topeka and Junction City, was pulling eight empty cars that day. A train was pulling a flat car loaded with army tanks when apparently one of the turrets on the tank swayed, knocking down the crossing pole. It also hit a sign west of town and the railroad bridge over Cross Creek. The mishap occurred Saturday evening, September 23, about 6:30. Title A name given to the resource Robert Kerwin Accident, 1975, Rossville, Kansas Subject The topic of the resource Transportation accidents Description An account of the resource Early Morning Accident Near Rossville Results in Injuries Robert Kerwin, 18, St. Marys, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Kerwin, was admitted to St. Francis Hospital early Wednesday morning following a three-vehicle smashup near Rossville. His left arm had to be amputated shortly after he was admitted. Kerwin was also treated for lacerations to his right arm and forearm. Lynn Weill, 31, Edna, was also admitted. He received treatment for contusions to his scalp, chest and shoulder. The accident occurred about 12:15 a.m. Wednesday, August 20, 1975, just east of Rossville on U.S.-24 Highway. A number of hogs being trucked to market were also killed. The highway patrol said a Jeep-like vehicle driven by Kerwin and headed west veered left of the center line of the highway and sideswiped a truck loaded with hogs headed east and on the highway. The patron said Weill apparently lost control of the truck, crossed over the center line and sideswiped a westbound pickup driven by Gerry Dolezilek, 17, Rossville. Dolezilek was not injured. Authorities said most of the hogs in the truck were killed in the accident. Those that survived were rounded up later in the morning. Title A name given to the resource Harold Irwin's 1910 Great Smith car, 1973, Rossville, Kansas Subject The topic of the resource Transportation Description An account of the resource Great Smith Comes Home At last, the day had arrived! The beautiful bright red and black 1910 Great Smith which Harold Irwin, Rossville, purchased in Dallas was transported to Rossville by a specially-built van constructed to handle antique cars. Mr. Irwin, the proud owner of this masterpiece, indicates it is the only one of its kind outside a museum. The auto, built in Topeka at the former Smith Bros. auto factory, is in excellent condition. Irwin bought it from H.A. "Barney" Hackney. A Topeka historian, John Ripley, indicated the car is just one of two Great Smiths in existence. The other Great Smith, a 1908 model touring car, is on display in the Kansas State Historical Society Museum in Topeka. Irwin owns three other antique cars: a 1937 Chrysler Airflow, a 1930 Dodge and a 1934 Airflow custom-built sedan; and belongs to three antique car clubs. Hackney's father, the late George W. Hackney, purchased the car new in 1910. He was an executive in a Topeka milling operation. In 1933, much of the body was destroyed in a hurricane. It has since been restored to its original specifications, a project which took ten years. Originally the car was a touring car but it was restored as a roadster. After the hurricane, the major parts of the car were stored. The finished product contains all the original mechanical parts, although Hackney had to fabricate some of the sheet metal himself and contract a company to build new front fenders. The engine, wood frame, rear fenders, transmission, radiator, carbide lamps and front axle and springs are all the original parts, according to Irwin. The original owner's manual and parts books is with the car. Irwin had read an advertisement about the car being for sale. His interest in the Great Smith began when he helped move the historical museum's auto out of storage in 1947. He plans to take his "new" car to antique auto shows and rallies. An interesting tread on the tires is formed by the words "non skid" being placed at an angle around the tire. The raised letters of the words form the tread. A battery starter was added in 1912 when the car was returned to the factory for modification. The dream of a lifetime has come true for Harold Irwin now that he has purchased the Great Smith. The lower picture shows the car in which the single occupant died in a one-car accident Saturday. --------------- Two separate one-car accidents took four lives in a three-day period on Highway 24 between St. Marys and Rossville last week. The first accident occurred Thursday evening when a station wagon with nine passengers hit a bridge abutment and plunged into Cross Creek at Rossville's west city limits. Dead in this accident were Mrs. Ada Wright, 27, Syracuse, driver of the station wagon, and two of her children: Kristie Marie Wright, 2, and Carl G. Wright, 4. The body of Carl was not recovered until Friday afternoon. Also injured in the accident were Frankie Wright 8, Raymond Wright 9, LaVonna Wright 5, and Joy Hazlett, 16, all of Syracuse; and Berlin Wagoner, 22, Lakin. The second fatal accident occurred Saturday evening about two miles east of St. Marys when a car driven by Nathaniel Ware, 45, Topeka, left the highway and struck a utility pole. Ware's body was thrown out of the car. Witnesses said Ware was attempting to pass another car when he apparently lost control of his vehicle. --------- A very tragic accident occurred last Thursday night when a station wagon driven by Mrs. Ada Wright, 27 of Syracuse, Ks., plunged off the bridge and into Cross Creek at Rossville. There were nine people in the station wagon; two children thrown out into the water; Kristie Marie, 2 years old and Carl Wright, 4 years old were dead when found. Mrs. Wright died before reaching the hospital. The four other children; Raymond, 9; Frankie, 8; LaVonna, 6 and Llewellyn, 5 suffered multiple bruises and abrasions. Also injured were Joy Hayzeltt, 16, of Syracuse and Berlin Wagoner, 22, of Lakin, Kans. They were reported in serious condition at Stormont Vail Hospital. Mrs. Wright was on a trip from Syracuse to see her husband who was working in Kansas City, Mo. Searchers found the bodies of the two children hours after the accident. Harvey Bonher, Shawnee County undersheriff said excessive speed was the cause of the accident. Sheriffs officers reported the vehicle was estimated to be traveling 80 miles per hour when it rounded the curve at the west edge of Rossville. -------------- Rossville Are inured in one-car accident Mrs. Rae Trimble Mrs. Francis Davis and her daughter, Candace, 10, were injured in a one-car accident near Rossville Saturday. The Davis car was westbound on US-24 west of Rossville when Mrs. Davis lost control of the vehicle on any icy bridge and the auto skidded into a ditch, the Kansas Highway Patrol said. The mishap occurred at approximately 11:20 a.m., officers said. Mrs. Davis and her daughter were taken to St. Francis Hospital in Topeka, where both were admitted for observation of possible head injuries. Stitches were taken in a cut on Mrs. Davis' head and her daughter sustained multiple bruises, hospital officials said. -The Capital. Charles J. Oldfield, 59, of Rossville was charged with second degree arson Friday in the Court of Topeka. Oldfield lived next door to the Ables house (the former Wm. O'Neil place) which was vacant. Another attempt to set the house on fire was made by setting a fire in this cabinet drawer. Even the box containing the wallpaper sitting below the drawer was burned. The third attempt, putting rags between lath in the wall, also burned itself out without setting the house on fire. Bare footprints in the snow from the Oldfield door to the Ables door lead in the arrest of Oldfield. He gave no reason for the arson attempt.
