Zeller's yield of 6036.35 pounds per acre topped Shawnee County in the dryland division of the 1958 National Selected Five Acre DeKalb Sorghum Yield Contest. C.V. Kelsey of Rossville the outstanding young farmer of the year. Kelsey, 30, has been farming for eight years. He operates a partnership project of 750 acres, 360 of which is irrigated, and specializes in hybrid seed corn, hybrid milo seed, and certified seed wheat, and uses a deferred feeding system for cattle. He was graduated from Kansas State College and is a member of the Farm Management Association No. 4 of Northeast Kansas, of which he served as president for one year and secretary for three. Kelsey is a member of the state membership committee of the Farm Bureau and has been president for two years of the county group and a member of the board of directors four years. He also has served as editor of the county Farm Bureau News. He also belongs to Topeka Lodge No. 17, Scottish Rite Bodies. He and his wife, Greta, have a daughter six years old a son, four. Title A name given to the resource Kaw Valley irrigation tour to center in Rossville, 1959, Rossville, Kansas Description An account of the resource Friday, August 28, is the date of the Kaw Valley irrigation and crops tour. The day will get under¬way at 9:00 AM at the Clifford Holcomb farm which is located ½ mile west of the Kiro store on Highway 24, west of Topeka. Mr. Holcomb used irrigation early this season and used high rates of fertilization. At 9:40 a trip is scheduled at the Sam Kelsey faun, located one mile southeast of Silver Lake on Highway 24. Mr. Kelsey uses sip-hon tubes in his irrigation opera-tion, along with good fertilization. Clyde Rogers, one mile south of Rossville, irrigated com that is be-ing grown for silage. The result is high tonage per acre. The tour is scheduled at Rogers at about 10:20 AM. At about 11:00 AM the group will stop at the M/C. Rasch farm, just south of Rossville where fert¬ilizer use and irrigation will be shown and discussed. The last stop will be at about 11:30 AM at the Joe Campbell farm, northwest of Rossville. Camp¬bell was one of the first in the Val¬ley to use irrigation. This year he used chemicals for European Com Borer control. This will be discuss¬ed at the stop. At noon the group will be given a lunch in the Rossville City Park through the courtesy of the Berry Irrigation Supply. A short program will follow, at which time the specialists will summarize discussions.
