The couple arrived in Kansas on April 15, 1856. Breithaupt served in the union Army. After he returned, this house was constructed c. 1870 for the family which included eleven children. Breithaupt's son, Martin, later operated the farm. It was sold out of the family in 1955. The existing residence was cronstructed in 1904 to replace a house destroyed by fire. The first horse barn was constructed in the 1880s. A milking barn and feeding barn were built in the early twentieth century. Since the new "horse barn" was completed in 1926it was not needed for horses and has been used as a hay barn. The farm also boasts a natural spring which supplied water for the livestock feeding operation.
